Interested in the commodification of ‘the self’ and how identities are shaped by everyday objects and belongings, Roisin Molly explores self-identity through an approach to painting which critically observes and challenges her surroundings. Analysing her immediate environment, Molly considers painting’s relationship with process and collage to make energetic two-dimensional arenas that reflect the simultaneous chaos and attraction of (her) contemporary life. She pays close attention to blending and layering carefully selected colour and form in an almost pictorial method of storytelling, juxtaposing modes of application and implied tactility to celebrate the glorious messiness of existence. These paintings function as a love letter to herself, embracing the integral role of even the smallest elements in shaping largely personal narratives and perceptions across contrastingly large-scale fields of painterly activity.
